- Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone is the president of Caltagirone, a holding company with interests in construction, cement, real estate, finance and publishing.
- His family, which hails from Sicily, was in the construction and real estate business, which he expanded and took into other sectors.
- In 1999, after buying several papers, he built media group Caltagirone Editore, Italy's sixth largest newspaper publisher.
- The bulk of his wealth is now stakes in two publicly traded firms: insurance company Assicurazioni Generali and cement giant Cementir.
- Caltagirone joined the billionaire Del Vecchio family to acquire significant stakes in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, the bank launch a successful takeover of investment bank Mediobanca.
