- Djoko Susanto is the founder of Alfamart, which has more than 22,000 convenience stores across Indonesia and 2,000 stores in the Philippines.
- The sixth of 10 siblings, he started managing his parents' modest food stall inside a traditional market in Jakarta at age 17.
- He later partnered with clove cigarette tycoon Putera Sampoerna to open similar stalls and then a discount supermarket chain.
- When Putera sold his cigarette business to Philip Morris in 2005, Susanto bought the retail business and developed it into the Alfamart chain.
- In 2022, the company bought a $30 million stake in Bank Aladin Syariah, which provides sharia-compliant financial services.
- Susanto's daughter Feny and sons, Budiyanto and Harryanto, hold senior positions at Alfamart.
