- Athanasios Martinos is the owner of Greek shipping firm Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, which has a fleet of 75 tankers, bulk carriers and container vessels.
- He founded the company in 1990, after splitting from the family shipping company Thenamaris, which he had cofounded with his mother and two brothers in 1972.
- Collectively, Athanasios and his brothers Andreas and Constantinos own the largest shipping fleet in Greece, the largest shipowning nation in the world.
- He also owns a Cyprus-based real estate investment firm which holds office and retail properties in London and Geneva.
- He served as the civil administrator of the monastic community of Mount Athos, an autonomous region run by Orthodox monks in Greece, from 2019 to 2023.
